Aberteifi a’r Môr 2

Mae lleoliad daearyddol Aberteifi ar lan afon Teifi, sy’n llifo i Fae Ceredigion, Môr Iwerddon, yr Iwerydd a thu hwnt, yn golygu fod y môr wedi dylanwadu ar ei hanes erioed. Wrth bori drwy gofnodion claddu a darllen arysgrifau cerrig beddau y rhai a gladdwyd ym mynwent Eglwys y dref, mae’r cysylltiad yn un amlwg iawn. Mae’r wybodaeth yn datgelu’r trasedïau, ond hefyd obaith a dyheadau nifer o bobl ifanc y dref.

Roedd yr afon yn gallu bod yn fan peryglus i blant chwarae. Boddodd rhai yn afon Teifi.

  • David William, 3ydd mab John ac Elizabeth, ym mis Gorffennaf 1844 yn ddim ond 11 oed.
  • Ym mis Mehefin 1890 boddodd William H. Smith, Mwldan.

Boddodd eraill wrth groesi’r bar.

  • Ym mis Mehefin 1825 boddodd George Jefferson, 17 oed, a John Pratt, 22 oed, pan suddodd y brig Active.

Bae Ceredigion oedd y man olaf i rai weld golau dydd.

  • Boddodd Richard Finch, mab Mary ger Ceinewydd ym mis Mawrth 1827 yn 27 oed.
  • Boddodd Thomas Thomas, 15 oed, ym mis Hydref 1843.
  • Boddodd John Evans, 30 oed ym mis Tachwedd 1866.

Boddodd William Phillips ail fêt ar fwrdd yr SS Cyfarthfa, wrth gwympo mewn i Ddoc Dwyreiniol Biwt, Caerdydd ym mis Hydref 1897. Gedy weddw a dau o blant.

Yn aml ceir bod rhywrai wedi colli eu bywyd ar y môr heb nodi’r union daith.

  • Morgan Morgan, 45 oed, Rhagfyr 1846.
  • William Miles, 19 oed, mab John a Dorothy, Rhagfyr 1847.
  • William James, 29 oed yn Ebrill 1853.
  • John Charles, 31 oed, mab David, Awst 1893.

Yn yr achosion ble nodir y daith ceir awgrym o ba mor bell y teithient. Mae’n amlwg nad “lle anghofiedig” oedd Aberteifi a gellid cwrdd â phobl Aberteifi ar draws cyfandiroedd y byd ymhell cyn bod neb wedi breuddwydio am agor y rheilffordd rhwng Aberteifi a Chaerfyrddin, dyfodiad ceir a bysys, neu adeiladu maes awyr Caerdydd!

Aberteifi a’r Môr 1

Yn ôl tystiolaeth Dr J. Geraint Jenkins yn ei lyfr Maritime Heritage: the ships and seamen of Southern Ceredigion, Gomer, 1982:

tudalen 111 “The port of Cardigan and, to a lesser extent, the riverside village of St. Dogmaels, developed into a very important shipbuilding centre and flourished tremendously, particularly during the first half of the nineteenth century. The following entries in nineteenth century Directories indicate how important the industry was in Cardigan.”
