18826 Memoirs of a P.O.W. during the years 1940–45, Edward Vernon Mathias.

Ar gael i lawrlwytho i’ch Kindle:

Dim ond £3.06 i lawrlwytho. Yr arian yn mynd at Sefydliad y Lleng Brydeinig.

Cyn y rhyfel gweithiai Vernon Mathias yn siop John Lewis, Stryd Oxford, Llundain. Ar ddechrau’r ail ryfel byd ymunodd gyda Chatrawd Reiffl y Frenhines Victoria. Erbyn 1940 roedd ar ei ffordd i Ffrainc. Bu’n ymladd o gwmpas Calais, cafodd ei anafu a’i ddal. Wedyn, treuliodd 5 mlynedd mewn sawl camp cyn cyrraedd carchar rhyfel yng Ngwlad Pwyl. Mae ei gyfrol hynod ddiddorol ac onest yn disgrifio bywyd bob dydd mewn Carchar Rhyfel, y caledi a’r gobaith am ddyfodol gwell nôl yn Aberteifi.

“We moved off stumbling over the railway lines, a stinking, dirty and dishevelled mob…
“the Red Cross food parcel was the one thing that we looked forward to…”
“Physically I lost weight in a rapid an alarming manner and the side effects were weakness, an outbreak of skin sores, loss of some teeth and worst of all, one’s weakness encouraged the infestation of body lice which practically made life unbearable”

Yn y camp mae’n cwrdd â gŵr arall o Aberteifi – Jack Griffiths!

Mae’r Hydref yn ymestyn mla’n i’r Gaeaf caled:

“The river Vestula froze to a great depth…”
“The frosty nights were marvellous and I would look at the stars and imagine Nan (later his wife) also looking at the same stars…”

Cafodd ei symud wedyn i Heydebreck. Mae 1941… yn mynd heibio, wedyn 1942… ac wedyn  1943. Roedd bywyd yn anodd – cloddio ffosydd tra bo’r ymosodiadau o’r awyr yn bla, nenwedig yn ystod haf 1942. Wedyn mae swyddog meddygol newydd yn cyrraedd – Capten James o Geinewydd. (Bu farw yn 1981). Mae Vernon Mathias wedyn yn penderfynu, cynllunio a cheisio (ond yn methu) dianc o’r Gwersyll. Canlyniad hyn oedd treulio misoedd ar ben ei hun mewn cell (10tr x 6 tr).

“1943 gradually came to a close and Christmas was here again…”
“whilst we POWs grumbled over our lot, it was as nothing compared to what the Jews suffered…”

Ar 22 Ionawr 1945 mae’r orymdaith i rhyddid yn cychwyn, gan ddianc o flaen y Rwsiaid oedd yn dilyn. Ar ôl sawl wythnos dyma gyrraedd Burgmeistr, ym Mafaria.

“We flew home via Holland…when I arrived in Carmarthen railway station there was a taxi waiting for me. It took me the last 30 miles to Cardigan arriving in the evening where quite a few people were waiting to welcome me. My sister and my parents were waiting at the front door.”

“My journey was over” ac yn bryd edrych tua’r dyfodol.

Bon Marche c.1984

Darlun cyfareddol o fywyd fel carcharor rhyfel.
